Beyond Appearances

AcuEssence logoAcclaimed violinist Joshua Bell, played incognito at L’Enfant Plaza metro station in Washington, D.C. on January 12, 2007 in an experiment organised by the Washington Post.

Playing Bach on a Stradivarius violin, Bell thinks he did some of his best work in the final few minutes of his 45 minute performance. But it received very little interest from the 1,097 people that walked past at rush hour and earnt only $32.17. Two days before this, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats average $100.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year old boy, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly whilst he continued turning his head until out of sight.

The social experiment was about peoples perception and priorities. Why not stop and listen to a virtuoso musician playing incredible music on a violin worth millions?
